If you already have the materials, it makes sense to make something yourself instead of trying to buy something like it. I’ve been needing a red tie, so I just made one out of an old Coke shirt and silk tie that I never wear. You can view the step-by-step here. Here’s how I did it:

Step 1. Open the stitching down the length of the tie.

Step 2. Remove the inner padding. This is the part we’ll need to hang on to.

Step 3. Wrap the old cover around the shirt and trace with a marker or pen. Give yourself a little extra when you cut. It’s always better to have to much fabric that you can trim down later.

Step 4. Check to make sure that everything is straight an cut out properly.

Step 5. We’ll need to make the pocket for the inner padding. Fold the tip back slightly and bring the two sides over. It’s helpful to use an iron to crease the edges once they’re folded. Put a thread through the center fold, but make sure to not go all the way through to the bottom side.

step 6. (Optional) I re-cut the inner padding to the same width as one of my other ties. This is the perfect time to make a wide tie slimmer, or just leave it as it already is.

Step 7. Place the padding into the new cover. You can do the pocket on the small end now, or any time before step 9.

Step 8. Use an iron to crease one side of the cover the pad, then cut away any excess fabric. Make sure to not cut too close to the center.

Step 9. Fold over and iron a small section of fabric in order to give the other side a clean edge.

Step 10. Try to get the second fold as close to the center as possible.

Step 11. Make a new seam all the way up the length of the tie. You can make it cleaner than I did. I was just too lazy. You’ll want to get the thread into the pad, but make sure nothing goes all the way through to the front side. I tied it at this point and figured out where I wanted to put the new loop.

Congratulations, you’re done!
